Components of the Allen Battery

  1. Allen Cognitive Level Screen (ACLs) and the Large Allen Cognitive Level Screen (LACLs) This manual is currently being revised and upgraded by a working committee of Allen Cognitive Advisors/Ltd. (March 2007).
Allen Cognitive Level Assessment in Process
The fifth revision of both these screening tools was completed in early 2007 and a manual has been written. This manual is still in the process of being published (Sep 2007).The third revision of both these tools was undertaken in June 1999. Allen Cognitive Advisors worked consistently for a full day to complete this revision and further work occurred by email over the following year. I know I was there! To view the results of that day and the work that followed go to the Allen Cognitive Network. http://www.allen-cognitive-network.org
  2. Allen Diagnostic Module (ADM) Revised and Upgraded in 2006 by Catherine Earhart

(1988) The Expanded Activity Analysis was published; this became the forerunner to the ADM. Different craft projects were developed and analysed by cognitive level. The continual talk by therapists about high and low levels and even high-high and low-low levels showed there was a requirement to break the levels into smaller units. The need for modes of each level emerged.

(1989-1991) Tina Blue, who had a wealth of experience in physical disabilities, joined Claudia Allen and Cathy Earhart in their pursuit of establishing modes of performance. The knowledge that Tina brought enabled them to pull cognitive and physical disabilities together and resulted in Understanding Cognitive Performance Modes.

(1992) The book, OT Treatment Goals for the Physically and Cognitively Disabled was published by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

(1993) S&S Worldwide offered the Allen Diagnostic Module (ADM) for sale. The ADM offers an assessment tool that assesses the capacity of a person to learn new information, while doing an out of the ordinary activity. How the person is able to attend (sensory cues) to the project, assimilate information given by cues (verbal cues) or demonstration (motor responses), can predict their capacity to adapt to an ever-changing human and non-human environment. The prediction of functional outcome is based upon task equivalence.

(1994) The ‘Safety Series Projects’ were added to the ADM to provide a clearer assessment of new learning and reading comprehension in level five.

(2006) The ADM manual has been extensively upgraded by Catherine Earhart and this manual can be ordered through S&S Worldwide.

(2007) Manual for the Allen Cognitive Level Screen-5 (ACL-5) and Large Allen Cognitive Level Screen-5 (LACLS-5) this manual can be ordered through S&S Worldwide.
